HISTORY OF JCL
Jefferson County Library District was established by the Jefferson County Commission in 1983. The Northwest and Fox-Windsor library subdistricts of Jefferson County Library were established, with a twenty cent levy, in 1989 by popular vote.
The Jefferson County Library Board of Trustees, appointed by the Commission, governs the library subdistricts; the Library Director, employed by the Board of Trustees, is the chief executive officer.
In June, 1991, two branches, Northwest in High Ridge and Fox-Arnold in Arnold, were opened. In June, 1998, the newly constructed Windsor Branch (first district owned building) was opened.
During 2003, construction began on a new facility for the Fox-Arnold Branch,
and, in 2004, a facility was purchased as the future location for the Northwest
Branch.
From the beginning, the library was automated - the catalog, acquisitions, and cataloging. A significant 2002 goal was achieved in January when Internet access to the catalog became available.
Emphasis has been placed on developing collections and services for adults and young adults, as well as children, and on staff development. Most popular among the programs and services for adults, including seniors, have been the Beginning and Intermediate Computer Classes and basic reference services (helping you find what you need or want). Programming has been enhanced by cooperative projects with organizations, schools, and other institutions and agencies in the county.
Among the Outreach services are: delivery of books and other library materials to the homebound, informational visits to local businesses, and talks/visits to schools and organizations (adult, young adult, and children's).
