Creating a Citation for Each Piece of Genealogical Evidence

This class will explore the basic format for genealogy citations. Many examples will be given so one can understand the process no matter if citing a census, or a newspaper article, a personal e-mail or an online database, etc. This class will also explain why citing sources are an essential part of genealogy. In this program participants will learn how to access the federal census from 1790 to 1940. Plus learn research techniques to locate their ancestors in the federal census. The instructor will cover the history of the federal censuses, and the pros and cons of using censuses in ones research. Anyone researching their family history can benefit from this class. Participants will learn how to use genealogy websites, provided by the Jefferson County Library system, to begin or advance their family history research. Mobile Digital Scanners for Family Research

Presenters will demonstrate the Google Play app “Cam-scanner”. This app can turn any smartphone into a scanner. They will show you how this app is used to scan, sync, edit, share, and manage various contents on all devices. Also the Flip-Pal mobile scanner will be demonstrated. This small flatbed scanner can digitally scan any size photograph, letter, documents. Flip-Pal includes EasyStitch software.

Famlysearch.org is one of the best free genealogy sites online. New genealogy information is being added to this website weekly, if not daily. Participants will learn how to navigate within this free website for its maximum potential. Also, genealogists may order microfilm and microfiche for a small fee from the website through the Northwest Branch Library. The materials are shipped to the library and may be used there. Discover the most helpful websites and internet resources to aid in genealogy research. Learn which resources are free, and what information they will provide. The instructor will focus on some of the best free genealogical websites on the Internet, demonstrating how to navigate within these sites. Participants will learn about commonly used sites and several uncommon websites used to further ones family research.

The 1799 Spanish Land Grant to James Rogers Sr. of Jefferson County

The speaker's 5th great-grandfather settled on Big River along with five or six other families from the Carolinas in May 1801, on land granted by the Spanish government.  It wasn't until 1834 that the United States confirmed the land to the claimant's descendants, but only after several parcels had been sold by the government under original land patents!  The speaker's research will be described, including relevant resources, breakthroughs, dead-ends, and unsolved mysteries.  Testimony from hearings before the Board of Land Commissioners will be used to describe the US government process for determining the validity of claims made under French and Spanish rule of Louisiana, and to provide glimpses of early pioneer life in Jefferson County. This program is free to the public. No reservation required.

The Special Collection has a wide range of genealogical material. Participants will learn about the many resources available, including information not just on Jefferson County, Missouri and its people but genealogy material throughout the United States. Plus if the material is not available at this branch, there are library services that can assist in locating that allusive family information through an online database, interlibrary loan or familysearch.org microfilm rental.
